Dharun Ravi, Rutgers webcam spy convict, is released from N.J. jail

(CBS/AP) NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi, 20, was released from jail today after serving 20 days of his 30-day sentence. Federal authorities on Monday also said that Ravi will not face deportation after being convicted of bias intimidation for using a webcam to spy on his roommate Tyler Clementi and another man kissing.

Ravi reported to Middlesex County jail on May 31, after a judge had sentenced him to 30 days in jail. Like other county jail inmates, Ravi was automatically given five days off for good behavior and five days for good working. He was scheduled to be released Tuesday morning.

Federal immigration authorities said Monday that Ravi will not be deported to his native India, where he lived there until he was 5 years old. Ravi remains an Indian citizen although he is in the U.S. legally.

Ravi was convicted in March of 15 criminal charges, including bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and tampering with a witness. During a trial that lasted three weeks, jurors heard that Ravi used a friend's computer in September 2010 to view a live streaming video from his own dorm-room webcam and saw roommate Tyler Clementi and another man kissing.

He told others about it in person, in texts, instant messages and tweets - and alerted others again two days later that Clementi wanted the room to himself again, athough the camera did not work that time.

A night later Clementi committed suicide and his story has been held up as a prime example of what can go wrong when young gays are bullied, although Ravi was not charged with the death.

Ravi still faces three years of probation, plus more than $11,000 in fines and assessments, 300 hours of community service, and counseling. His lawyer said he'll start paying off the fines and begin working on the community service part of his sentence.
