Officials: Deputy, police chief shot in western Arkansas
HACKETT, Ark. -- A sheriff's office spokesman says two law enforcement officers have been shot in western Arkansas and a suspect is in custody after a standoff.
Sebastian County Sheriff's Office Lt. Philip Pevehouse says the shooting happened Wednesday morning near the town of Hackett, about 170 miles west of Little Rock, while the officers were responding to a report of a domestic incident.
One of the officers is a Sebastian County deputy, Bill Cooper, and the other is the Hackett chief of police, Darrell Spells, the sheriff's office told CBS affiliate KFSM.
The deputy is reportedly in extremely critical condition. The chief was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday morning.
KFSM reports the suspect, identified by Greenwood city leaders as Billy Jones, 34, was barricaded inside a home Wednesday morning and engaged in a standoff with officers. Pevehouse told the station the shooting suspect was carrying a semi-automatic weapon.
Police were reportedly able to convince Jones to surrender peacefully and he was taken into custody.
The Sebastian County Sheriff's Department told the station Jones had negative feelings toward law enforcement officers.
