(CBS News) Dennis Quaid and his wife, Kimberly Buffington-Quaid, are headed for a divorce after nearly eight years of marriage.

TMZ obtained a divorce petition filed by the actor's wife that states: "The marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities ... that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation."

A rep later released a statement announcing the news: "We can confirm that Kimberley Quaid has filed for divorce. Contrary to what has been reported, a satisfactory settlement is being worked out for both parties. We will not be providing any further information on this private matter."

TMZ earlier reported that Kimberly was seeking spousal support and attorney's fees. There's a temporary custody agreement for the couple's 4-year-old twins, and Kimberly is currently living in their main residence, according to the site.

The pair tied the knot in 2004. Quaid, 57, has been married twice before - first to actress P.J. Soles and then to Meg Ryan.

Quaid has a role in the upcoming film, "What to Expect When You're Expecting," co-starring Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz.
