"Degrassi" heading to Netflix with the "Next Class"
"Degrassi" might be graduating from TeenNick next month, but the show isn't going away for good.
Netflix and Canada's Family Channel will air 20 new episodes of a new version of the series, titled "Degrassi: Next Class," starting early next year.
The streaming service announced the news just like a high-schooler might -- with a passed note (posted on Twitter):
"We are energized and excited to work with Family Channel as we tell stories for the new post-millennial teen cohort known as Generation Z, most of whom weren't even born when 'Degrassi' returned in 2001," "Degrassi" co-creator and executive producer Linda Schuyler said in a statement, via E! News.
Stars reprising their roles on "Next Class" include Amanda Arcuri, Reiya Downs, Ana Golja,Nikki Gould, Ricardo Hoyos, Ehren Kassam, Andre Kim, Lyle Lettau, Spencer Macpherson, Eric Osborne, Olivia Scriven, Sara Waisglass and Richard Walters.
"Degrassi" has had many incarnations over the years, dating as far back as 1979. The most recent one, "Degrassi: The Next Generation" (which once counted now-rapper Drake amongst its cast), will end its run on TeenNick beginning July 20 with an hourlong special, followed by episodes airing weeknights through July 31.
