D.C. Runway Reopens After Vintage Plane Accident

Last Updated 2:10 p.m. ET

The main runway at Reagan National Airport has reopened after a vintage aircraft flipped upside-down when it landed.

The plane was part of an aerial demonstration of vintage Stearman biplanes that were flying in formation and landing to promote "Legends of Flight," an IMAX movie making its debut in Washington.

Film producer Pietro Serapiglia said the plane landed, but then flipped over, resting upside-down on its upper wing, two tires in the air.

On board were the pilot and a reporter from the Washington Post, who captured the accident on video (see below).

Neither was seriously injured in the crash.

Sybrina Lambeth of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said the accident occurred just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

No commercial planes were involved.

The main runway at Reagan National Airport was closed for about an hour and a half during the investigation; a crane was brought to the scene to upright the plane.

Auxiliary runways were used so planes are still able to arrive and depart the airport.

FAA records show the 1943 Boeing is registered to Michael Truschel of Nokesville, Va.
