D.C. Panda Cub Takes First Steps
The National Zoo's panda cub has taken his first steps.
Chief veterinarian Suzan Murray says the cub used four shaky limbs to move himself forward today after a medical exam. Until this morning, the panda had only used his front legs.
Murray says they also noticed the cub's teeth are coming in. But he's still a ways off from eating solid food, and won't be weaned off his mother for another year.
The three-month-old cub now weighs nearly 13 pounds and is two feet tall.
The cub's next milestone comes Monday, when a naming ceremony is held at the zoo in Washington. It comes 100 days after his birth, in keeping with Chinese tradition. The name was chosen in an online poll.
