NEW YORK (CBS) Dax Shepard has been taking a break from his usual comedic identity and delving into more dramatic roles.

The 35-year-old actor stars in"The Freebie," an indie film about a married couple who decide to have one night stands in the hopes that it will reignite passion in their own relationship.

According to Babble.com, Kate Aselton co-stars and directs the film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. It was shot in less than two weeks and had little to no script, forcing the actors to call upon their improvisational skills.

Shepard seems to be moving away from his "Punk'd" and "Baby Mama" comedic comfort zone, as he currently is on the family drama "Parenthood" on NBC.

"The Freebie" will open in limited release Sept. 17.
