Daughtry On Top

Hit singles such as "It's Not Over" and "Home" have made former "American Idol" contestant Chris Daughtry and his band No. 1.

Their current CD has just gone triple-platinum, and is the biggest-selling album of 2007.

The band, which took its name from its lead singer and gave it to the CD, as well, has spent the summer on tour, promoting the record.

"Daughtry" was summer's most-coveted live ticket. The band has been selling out clubs and halls throughout the country while garnering rave reviews.

"It's pretty cool," the performer told co-anchor Harry Smith on The Early Show Friday. "I don't know what else to say."

Daughtry said it "sometimes" seems real, but most of the time, it doesn't. "I don't think we ever have a chance to wrap our head around it. We're always on the road touring, and it's one thing after another, so I don't think we've really had a chance to relax yet."

His career has taken off since he finished fourth on season five of "Idol," and Daughtry reflected that he "knew what I wanted before I went into it. I knew who I was when I went in, I knew what I wanted, and that (appearing on 'Idol') gave people an opportunity to see who it was."

When it came time to assemble the band, Daughtry joked with Smith, he "kind of wanted to be like the Back Street Boys with guitars. So, we didn't really care if they could play their instruments. We just wanted a bunch of good-looking guys."

On a more serious note, Daughtry told CBS News he "zeroed in on the interpersonal chemistry and musical compatibility of the guys who would eventually eat, sleep and breathe 'Daughtry' 24/7."

As for a follow-up album, he says, "We've been thinking about it. We're writing on the road, and we haven't really plotted out a time to start working on it really, but, I mean, yeah. The shows (while touring) are definitely like instant gratification for us. I mean, that's the fun part for us, getting the feedback from the audience and hearing them sing the songs and everything. It's definitely paid off for us."
