"Dancing with the Stars" season 18 premiere: Who ruled the ballroom?
The new cast of "Dancing with the Stars" hit the ballroom Monday night for the show's season-18 premiere, showing off flashy costumes and some fancy footwork.
Many of the stars impressed the judges with their debut efforts, but none more so than Olympic gold medal-winning ice dancer Charlie White. The last dancer of the night to perform, he and partner Sharna Burgess wowed with a contemporary routine that earned them 27 points out of a possible 30, the highest score of the night.
White's ice dancing partner, Meryl Davis, also fared well. She and Maksim Chmerkovskiy received 24 points for a cha cha that judge Bruno Tonioli called "fantastic."
Others who earned praise from the judges included "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star NeNe Leakes, who danced an enthusiastic cha cha with partner Tony Dovolani; "The Wonder Years" star Danica McKellar for her foxtrot with Val Chmerkovskiy; former "Full House" actress Candace Cameron Bure and partner Mark Ballas, who danced contemporary; and paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy, who danced the cha cha on two prosthetic legs with partner Derek Hough.
So, who got the lowest score of the night? That would be actor Billy Dee Williams, for his "Star Wars"-themed cha cha routine danced with partner Emma Slater. Williams, 77, was recognized for his efforts but was only awarded 15 points out of 30.
It was also the debut night for sportscaster Erin Andrews, who made her first appearance as the new "DWTS" co-host alongside Tom Bergeron.
