Cut the New Year Fat -- and Hangover
With all those dips and hors d'oeuvres and drinks, New Year's Eve can be fun -- but fattening.
Registered dietician Keri Glassman, a Women's Health magazine contributing editor, shared how you can avoid extra calories and prevent hangovers at the same time!
So what should you do before you go to the party?
Glassman suggested these tips:
• Eat a snack! If you eat a snack you will be less likely to overindulge.
• Assess the situation at the party. Often there are healthy options. Don't throw in the towel before you have even checked things out.
• Have a non-alcoholic beverage choice. Will cut calories from overall drinks consumed but will also help with hangover the next day. The better hydrated you stay, the better off you will be on Jan. 1!
• Eat something with fat. This helps prevent a hangover. A salad with olive oil based dressing or handful of nuts are good options.
• Get a head start on your New Year's resolutions and workout before you celebrate New Year's Eve. Go into the New Year feeling good!
Glassman discussed these foods on "The Early Show":
Crudite and blue cheese dip (1 1/2 Tbsp.)
Calories: 245
Fat: 24 g
-VS-
Prosciutto (1 slice) and Melon
Calories: 85
Fat: 3 g
"That dip adds up so fast there, and adds up eight times the amount of fat," Glassman said. "So better to obviously go with the veggies and maybe have the melon and prosciutto."
Baked Brie (1 slice of a 7 oz. brie)
Calories: 256
Fat: 16
-VS-
Kielbasa (1 oz. portion)
Calories: 78
Fat: 12
"Here we've got kielbasa, which most people would think is the worst choice, but (the brie) has butter and and sugar and nuts added. So both not great choices," Glassman said.
Bacon (1/2 piece) wrapped scallop
Calories: 55
Fat: 1.75 g
-VS-
Coconut Shrimp (1)
Calories: 103
Fat: 1.25 g
"Even though shrimp in general is the better option, if it's steamed here, it's loaded with fat," she said.
Beef Skewer
Calories: 134
Fat: 4.9 g
-VS-
Sesame chicken skewer
Calories: 165
Fat: 4.5 g
Glassman said, "Because of the batter the calories are so high on the (sesame chicken skewer). Go for the cleaner-looking skewer."
Chocolate Mousse (2 oz. in shot glass)
Calories: 128
Fat: 9 g
-VS-
Petit fours (2 oz./2 cakes)
Calories: 140
Fat: 9 g
Glassman said, "Not a huge difference. But just a couple bites of a chocolate indulgence is going to cost you about 100 calories. So just have a little indulgence."
Champagne (4 oz. but note most glasses are 3 oz.)
Calories: 76
-VS-
White wine (4 oz.)
Calories: 88
"We've got to go for the champagne," Glassman said. "… Usually you sip the champagne a little bit slower, and also usually you're served an ounce little less."
And how to help prevent and cure a hangover this New Year's?
Glassman recommended these tips:
• Eat fat before you drink (of course, try to make that healthy fat like olive oil or nuts!)
• Drink water throughout the evening and before you go to bed and of course the next day.
• Eat eggs for breakfast!
• Have a banana and high vitamin C fruits or a little 100 percent juice mixed with your am glass of water.
