Customers thwart robbery at North Carolina Waffle House

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --Don't mess with the Waffle House in Fayetteville.

That's the message a would-be robber got when he tried to steal money from the 24-hour restaurant in North Carolina early Saturday morning.

Local media outlets report that police say the man pointed what was described as an AK-47-style rifle at employees and demanded money.

Police say a patron confronted the man, and a struggle began. Several patrons chased the man from the restaurant. The police say in a news release the man was last seen jumping a nearby fence.

Kelly Thrasher-Bruner, a spokeswoman for the chain that's based in Norcross, Georgia, said in an email that no one at the Fayetteville restaurant was available for comment.

"We are thankful that no one was hurt during this incident, especially the customers who helped prevent the robbery," she said, adding that company officials are working with authorities.
