Gay S.C. police chief fired illegally, lawyer says

LATTA, S.C. The lawyer for a fired gay police chief says she should get her job back because the South Carolina town of Latta didn’t follow the law.

Attorney Malissa Burnette sent a letter to Latta saying the Town Council did not vote in open session last week to fire Crystal Moore.

Town Administrator Jarrett Taylor said he thinks he alone under town ordinances has the ability to fire the police chief. Taylor, who is also a councilman, says he told council members of his plans and a majority approved.

Taylor says he fired Moore because she wasn’t doing her job right. Moore’s lawyer says she was fired in retaliation for getting an outside agency to investigate a sexual harassment complaint.
