Cops: Mom killed in hit-and-run helping disabled woman cross street

DETROIT -A Detroit mother of three was fatally struck by two hit-and-run drivers while trying to help a disabled woman cross the street, reports CBS Detroit.

Relatives say 36-year-old Darlene Austin was helping a woman in a wheelchair cross a street outside of her home Tuesday night when she was struck by two cars after she slipped and fell, reports the station. Both drivers fled the scene.

Austin was transported to a local hospital where she later died. Austin would have celebrated her 37th birthday on Wednesday.

Family told the station newly-installed LED traffic lights weren't working at the time of the accident.

Police are searching for the drivers of the vehicles that struck her. One is described as an older-model blue pickup truck with a ladder rack, while the other is an unknown sedan.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600.
