Cops: Colo. man kidnaps teen, forces him to drive 130 miles
CONIFER, Colo. - Investigators say they believe the suspect in a kidnapping case in central Colorado may have picked his teen victim after approaching several women in a parking lot outside a grocery store, reports CBS Denver.
Dakota Holand, 20, is suspected of kidnapping a teenager in Conifer last week, about 25 miles from Denver, and forcing the teen to drive him about 130 miles to Pueblo. Police say Holand may have had a gun and forced his way into the 16-year-old's vehicle.
"That male indicated that he had a weapon and told him to shut up and drive," said Jacki Kelley of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
On the way, police say the two stopped for gas. Holand reportedly went into a Shell convenience store, where he was captured by the store's surveillance system.
The video shows a shirtless Holand behaving in an odd manner.
"He kind of wanders around, approaches the counter, backs away from the counter and goes outside, so who knows what he was going to do," said Kelley.
Police say the distinct tattoo of his last name on his back helped officers identify Holand.
The station reports that after arriving in Pueblo, the teen drove to an unknown residence and Holand jumped out of the vehicle and ran away. The victim then called 911.
Police say Holand was captured in Aurora after allegedly stealing a car out of Canon City.
Investigators said they aren't sure how the suspect got from Pueblo to Canon City before then reaching Aurora.
