Colorado man calls 911, threatens to kill wife
LONGMONT, Colo. - Police in Longmont, Colo. arrested a man who they say called 911 and threatened to kill his wife, reports CBS Denver.
Police say the man called 911 Saturday at approximately 11:45 p.m. and said, "I'm going to kill my wife" before hanging up. Dispatch was able to determine the call came from a residence in Longmont.
When an officer responded to the scene, he could hear screaming coming from the apartment, reports the station.
"Soon thereafter, he was met by a extremely frantic female running from the apartment. She hid behind his back, clinging to his uniform and wouldn't let go, yelling, 'He tried to kill me, he is going to kill me, he has a knife,' " Cmdr. Jeff Satur said in a statement obtained by the station.
Satur said the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Richard Martinez, soon came out of the apartment with "two very large butcher style knives, one in each hand." The officer shielded the woman, drew his gun and then commanded Martinez to drop the knives, but he refused.
After what Satur described as a "tense standoff," another officer was able to use a stun gun on Martinez and he was taken into custody.
"The suspect is known to have choked the female and held the knife to her throat, telling her he would kill her. However she escaped when he was distracted by an unknown noise," Satur said.
Satur said the ordeal began earlier in the night at a bar, where Martinez became angry at the 38-year-old woman for talking to other men, reports the station.
"When they got back to their apartment, he began calling her derogatory names, assaulted her and strangled her," said Satur.
Martinez is charged is attempted first-degree murder, third-degree assault, felony menacing and domestic violence. More charges could be added, reports the station.
