Colbert and Stewart reunite for convention season
In just a few hours, Donald J. Trump will have defied every political rule in the book when he receives the formal Republican presidential nomination. CBS "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert admits he has no idea how America got to this point, so he called on someone who may be able to provide an untarnished perspective -- Jon Stewart.
The duo reunited once again after Stewart traded his comedy show for a horse ranch and a scruffy beard last year. In their sketch that followed the opening night of the Republican National Convention Monday night, Colbert arrived at his mentor's wooded cabin to relay the surprising results from this year's primary season.
COLBERT: Listen, you will not believe who the nominee is.
STEWART: You know the old Jon Stewart talked about politics and things like that ... me, I don't -- Jeb Bush will be a great nominee. Everything will be fine.
COLBERT: It's not Jeb, Jon. It's not Jeb.
STEWART: What?
COLBERT: I'm going to tell you who the candidate is ...
Once Stewart is informed of the Trump presidential ticket, he fires a series of questions to verify that they are both referring to the same person. Stewart asks, "The guy who filed bankruptcy in 1991?" "Mike Tyson's business adviser? That guy" "The guy whose eyes look like tiny versions of his mouth?" "That's the guy?"
After the minute-long exchange of ongoing questions, Colbert said, "So you can see why I'm here. You can understand what I'm asking for."
Stewart understands, and later emerges with Stephen Colbert dressed as Captain America, who upon learning of the possible next commander-in-chief, sprints out the doorway presumably to save America.
The late night skit follows Colbert's brief takeover of the RNC stage on Monday afternoon while flaunting an outlandish "Hunger Games" costume. He hijacked the mic for just about a minute before security escorted him off stage, but not before he said this, "Look, I know I'm not supposed to be up here, but let's be honest, neither is Donald Trump."
Colbert and Stewart fans can expect future appearances of the two together until the final gavel orders the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia next Sunday.
