Christopher Reeve

The late Christopher Reeve is perhaps the most beloved Superman of all, not only because he looked the part, but because of his triumph over tragedy in his personal life.

Reeve was chosen out of thousands to star in 1978's "Superman," directed by Richard Donner. He appeared in the film's three sequels: "Superman II," "Superman III," and the widely-panned "Superman IV: The Quest For Peace."

Reeve suffered a riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed. He went on to become an advocate for victims of spinal injuries, raising millions to fund research. Despite his injuries, he continued to direct and act in films. Reeve guest-starred as Dr. Virgil Swann on the Superman-themed WB series "Smallville." He died of heart failure at age 52 in October 2004.
