NEW YORK (CBS) Wednesday night's episode of "American Idol" tugged at America's heartstrings when Chris Medina performed as the last contestant in Milwaukee, Wis.

Singing "Break Even" by The Script, Medina impressed the judges not only with his voice, but with his heartbreaking story as well.

Medina, 26, proposed to girlfriend Juliana Ramos while working together at Starbucks. Two months before the wedding, Ramos was in a fatal car accident, causing permanent damage to her brain.

After six years of dating, he is still by Ramos' side.

"What kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me the most?" he said on the show.

The judges were so compelled by Medina's story that they invited Ramos into the studio to meet her.

Steven Tyler told Juliana, "He sings to you all the time. I could tell. That's why he sings so good- because he sings to you."

The show ended with Juliana whispering to Medina, who repeated: "She said, 'I knew it.'"
