Chris Evans premieres as "Captain America" (Pictures)

(CBS) There was no shortage of superheroes on Tuesday night when "Captain America: The First Avenger" premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Calif.

In addition to actor Chris Evans, who plays the title role, there were also his cast mates Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. Fans will know that Hemsworth is the superhero Thor in another franchise and Downey has done two big-screen turns as Tony Stark, the "Iron Man."

Also walking the red carpet on behalf of the action film, which opens in theaters on Friday, were stars Samuel L. Jackson and Hayley Atwell and director Joe Johnston.
