Chicago cop who killed 2 seen on video in off-duty bar fight
CHICAGO — A police officer who was already on desk duty after fatally shooting two people in 2015 was charged with battery and theft after a bar fight in December, reports CBS Chicago.
Chicago's police oversight agency released surveillance video of the off-duty bar fight involving police officer Robert Rialmo, who shot and killed Quintonio LeGrier, 19, and Bettie Jones, 55, in 2015.
The fight happened at a Moretti's restaurant at 2:45 a.m. on Dec. 17, 2017. Rialmo got into a scuffle with two other patrons, reports the station. Rialmo was charged with battery and theft after punching a man and allegedly stealing his jacket during the fight.
Rialmo, who was reportedly stripped of his police powers a few days after the bar incident, has said he fired at LeGrier in 2015 because the teen swung at him with a baseball bat. But the Civilian Office of Police Accountability has reportedly said they found no evidence LeGrier swung a bat at Rialmo, and that witnesses and evidence at the scene indicate Rialmo was farther away from the teen when he fired his gun. They determined that his use of deadly force was not within policy.
Jones, 55, a neighbor, was an innocent bystander.
The City of Chicago is being sued for both deaths.
