Celebrity mug shots continue to fascinate us

Forget the paparazzi! When it comes to the photographers celebrities fear most  -- they can be found in central booking. That's right -- the mug shot!

One-time senator and presidential hopeful John Edwards dressed sharply and smiled for his, but some past high-profile mugs haven't been so picture-perfect.

Once a candidate for vice president, Edwards is now under indictment for allegedly using nearly $1 million in campaign funds to cover up his affair with mistress Reille Hunter.

The mug shot from his arrest was released Wednesday by the U.S. Marshals Service. In it, he smiles politely for the camera.

But does his smile help him or hurt him?

While Edwards isn't the first to say "cheese" for his mug shot, other celebrities have set the bar for infamously being caught in the act -- from the former "Sexiest Man Alive", actor Nick Nolte, who was arrested on a DUI charge and looked like "a crazy, wild, homeless man" to actor Hugh Grant, who was arrested for allegedly soliciting a prostitute and appeared to be ashamed of himself.

What is it about these mug shots that fascinates us? CBS News Correspondent Betty Nguyen took a closer look.
