​CBS News poll: Majority of Americans were bullied as kids

Most Americans say they were bullied at some point while growing up, but only a few say it happened regularly.

According to a CBS News poll, just 10 percent of Americans say they were bullied a lot, and 22 percent say they bullied only sometimes. Twenty-six percent say they were bullied rarely, while 41 percent say they were never bullied when they were growing up.

But bullying might be on the rise: Younger Americans are more likely to say they've been bullied than are older Americans.

Among Americans ages 65 and older, 53 percent say they have never been bullied; this is true of just 43 percent of Americans ages 55-64, 36 percent of those 45-54, 39 percent ages 35-44, and only 34 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34.

This poll was conducted by telephone May 13-17, 2015 among a random sample of 1,017 adults. Data collection was conducted on behalf of CBS News by SSRS of Media, Pa. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.
