Carlos: King Of The Grammys
Carlos Santana is the big Grammy story this year, having received 10 nominations in such categories as Record and Album of the Year for his hit Supernatural.
Santana exploded on the rock scene in 1969 and, throughout his 30-year career, he previously received just five Grammy nominations, winning in 1988 for Best Rock Instrumental.
During an interview with Early Show Co-Anchor Jane Clayson, Wayne Isaak, VH1 executive vice president of music, said Santana's Grammy sweep is "a combination of the best album he's ever made and a bit of a coronation by NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) for Carlos."
Recording industry stars announced the Grammy nominees
Isaak also assessed some other big nominees:
- TLC, six nominations: "I think TLC made a tremendous pop album, but their roots are in R&B and hip hop. As a result, they qualify for more categories than others that might just be pop artists."
- Asleep at the Wheel, five nominations: "They made an album that is a real sort of tribute album to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboy Band. And, as a result, (they) had the biggest names in country collaborating with them, doing a bunch of songs by Bob Wills. As a result, they've gotten these nominations largely, I think, from the country genre."
- Backstreet Boys, four nominations: "They sold 10 million of their latest album, Millennium, and they are arguably the biggest male group going."
- Ricky Martin, three nominations: "Ricky Martin is clearly one of the big stories of the year," observed Isaak, adding, "If you count the Song of the Year -- which he didn't write, but he made it happen -- he's qualifying for four there. So I think it's almost a victory that Ricky has these nominations and not a lot more. I think he should be happy and stands a chance of at least pulling down a couple."
- Diana Krall, Album of the Year, When I Look In Your Eyes: "(She) comes from the jazz world and certainly does surprise a lot of peopleÂ… For her fans, I think they're over the moon about it."
- Shania Twain and Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Song Of The Year, You've Got A Way: "She's best known for other songs. I believe she and her partner, Mutt Lange, are phenomenal, but I was surprised about that particular song. (The nomination) was for the success she had more so than, perhaps, that one single song."
- Susan Tedeschi, Best New Artist: "She is a completeÂ…long shot and surprise, and one that I think is kind of wonderfulÂ… It's great to see somebody out of left field who is't a multiplatinum artist get a nod." A blues rock artist from the Boston area and a graduate of the Berklee School of Music, Tedeschi gained much attention following her tour dates with John Mellencamp.
The 42nd Annual Grammy Awards will be telecast live on CBS Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 8 p.m. ET.
