She added, "On this happy occasion, my husband joins me in expressing our warmest thanks to all those of you who sent us these tokens of your kindness."

Giulia arrived on Wednesday at a maternity clinic in Paris. According to People magazine, she was born at 7:30 p.m. and weighed 7 and a half pounds.

Earlier Thursday, the French president, 56, told reporters that he and his wife feel "a very profound happiness" over the birth of their daughter.

The baby girl is the first child ever born to a sitting French president. Sarkozy has three sons from two previous marriages, while Bruni-Sarkozy has a 10-year-old son from a previous relationship.
