(CBS/WUSA) WASHINGTON - Police in Washington D.C. say a car crashed into a reflecting pool on Capitol grounds early Tuesday morning after fleeing from police.

According to CBS affiliate WUSA, police say they first tried to pull a car over in the 1100 block of North Capitol Street around 2:43 a.m., but instead of stopping the driver sped off.

The driver's attempts to evade officers came to an abrupt end when the sedan plowed into the reflecting pool in Lower Senate Park less than a mile away.

The two men inside the vehicle tried to escape on foot after the crash, but were taken into custody a short distance away by Metropolitan Police Department officers, reports WUSA.

A weapon was reportedly recovered when police searched the vehicle.
