Firefighter, deputy found dead in apparent murder-suicide

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. -- Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding an apparent murder-suicide involving a male sheriff's deputy and a female firefighter in Los Angeles County, reports CBS Los Angeles.

According to the sheriff's department, deputies were sent around 10 p.m. Sunday to a La Cañada Flintridge home after a woman was reported screaming. Authorities then entered the house -- to find a 32-year-old woman dying from an apparent gunshot wound.

Paramedics later pronounced her dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation reportedly found that the victim's husband allegedly entered the home and shot her, according to the station.

"The suspect then fled the scene and drove to Los Angeles County Fire Facility in Pacoima where he killed himself," said Deputy Mike Barraza. "The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Authorities explained that detectives were notified of the suspect's body after it was found at the fire facility by police, according to the station.

Investigators would not identify the suspect and victim by their names -- saying only that she was an off-duty deputy sheriff and he was a firefighter. She had worked for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for two years, while he worked with the Los Angeles County Fire Department for five years.

Law enforcement told CBS Los Angeles that the couple's 6-year-old child was home at the time of the shooting, but was not injured.

Both names are being withheld pending family notification and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
