Calif. DMV worker allegedly took bribes for licenses

WESTMINSTER, Calif. -- A California Department of Motor Vehicles employee is accused of accepting bribes in exchange for providing driver's licenses.

According to a statement from the Orange County District Attorney's office, Jose Alberto Carrillo, 47 is charged with two counts of altering public documents and two counts of computer access and fraud, all felonies. If convicted, he faces up to five years in jail.

The charges stem from allegations that on May 10, 2012, Carrillo altered a customer's DMV record to indicate that he had passed a driving test that the customer actually failed. Carrillo allegedly told the customer to leave $100 in the men's bathroom of the DMV - to avoid security cameras.

Carrillo is also accused of illegally accessing a second customer's DMV record after business hours. He allegedly entered false information that the customer had provided a U.S. birth certificate as "proof of presence" in exchange for $500.

Prosecutors said that the second person was issued a driver's license, but that "the DMV became aware of the issue when one of the customers who had paid Carrillo came into the DMV complaining that he had not received his permanent [California driver's license] as promised."

The DA's statement indicates that Carrillo was arrested Thursday in Fresno and has since posted bail.
