Bruce Driver To Retire


Defenseman Bruce Driver, who helped the New Jersey Devils win the Stanley Cup in 1995 before switching to the New York Rangers, announced his retirement Friday.

Driver, 36, appeared in 922

regular-season NHL games, recording 96 goals and 390 assists for 486 points.

He holds Devils career records for defensemen for points (399), assists (316), goals (83) and power-play points (168).

Driver helped Wisconsin win two U.S. college championships before joining Canada's national team. He played for Canada at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, and at the 1987 world championships in Vienna.

He signed with the Rangers as an unrestricted free agent in 1995, playing in 220 games. In his first game with the Rangers, on Nov. 12, 1995, he assisted on Mark Messier's 500th NHL goal.

Driver's retirement was announced by the NHL Players Association.
