Brogna Lifts Phillies In 14th Inning
Rico Brogna summoned the energy to deliver his first hit of the night in his sixth at-bat. And it was a big one.
Brogna hit a two-run double with two outs in the 14th inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Montreal Expos 5-3 Monday night.
"It felt great," Brogna said. "I was struggling all night, and by the 10th or 11th inning I was really tired. I tried to dig down as deep as I could, so to win a game like that is big."
Pinch-hitter Ruben Amaro led off the 14th with a single off Shayne Bennett (1-3), Montreal's fifth pitcher. Doug Glanville singled him to second, and Brogna hit a drive to the right-centerfield fence to give Philadelphia a split of their four-game series with Montreal.
"He was 0-for-5 and he didn't give up," Philadelphia manager Terry Francona said. "He fouled off a 3-2 slider that was borderline. He saw enough pitches."
Wayne Gomes (3-1) allowed two hits in three scoreless innings, and Jerry Spradlin struck out the side in the 14th for his first save. Philadelphia improved to 5-1 in extra-inning games.
"I threw strikes," Gomes said. "I got a couple of groundballs when I fell behind in the count. I made two good pitches to (Brad) Fullmer. They were 2-0 pitches, and I threw him two good sinkers. And I made some good pitches early in the count."
Montreal wasted a chance to win in the 10th. After the Expos loaded the bases with two outs, Mark Leiter retired Mark Grudzielanek on groundout.
Philadelphia put runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth, but center fielder Rondell White robbed Scott Rolen of an extra-base hit with a sliding catch at the base of the wall in right-center.
"That was a pretty game to watch," Francona said. "Both sides had chances to do things. Rondell White makes that catch in the outfield, what an unbelievable play. Sliding on the warning track like that?"
The Phillies had tied the game 3-all in the fourth when pitcher Mark Portugal hit an RBI double and scored on Glanville's single.
Portugal allowed three runs and seven hits in eight innings. Expos starter Trey Moore gave up three runs and eight hits in seven innings.
"That was a heck of a ballgame," Montreal manager Felipe Alou said. "Well played, well pitched, then Brogna hit a ball in the gap and that was the game. Everybody pitched good, from Moore to Bennett. Some of those guys needed some work, so now if we need them in Atlanta, they'll be ready."
Moore walked Brogna with the bases loaded in the first, but the Expos went ahead 3-1 in the third on Mike Hubbard's first homer of the season and a two-run shot by Vladimir Guerrero, his ninth.
Notes: Grudzielanek and White have started all of Montreal's 49 games while Rolen is thonly player to have started all 48 Phillies games ... Gregg Jefferies singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Jefferies is 20-for-51 (.392) over the course of the streak. Hubbard's homer was only his third hit of the season in his 25th at-bat. Hubbard finished the game 2-for-6 and is now 4-for-30 (.133) on the season. ... Rolen made a great play in the fourth to deprive Hubbard of his second straight hit, diving to his left to stop a grounder and throwing to first.
