NEW YORK (CBS/AP) The NFL investigation into Brett Favre has ended with a $50,000 fine - but not a suspension - for the Minnesota Vikings quarterback who allegedly sent graphic messages to sports reporter Jenn Sterger while both were employed by the New York Jets.

Favre was ultimately punished not for the actual text and phone messages, but instead for not cooperating with the league's investigation.

Sterger claims Favre left several inappropriate voice mails and sent lewd photos to her during the 2008 Jets season. The scandal erupted online when Gawker sports blog Deadspin released the purported messages online.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King said the league ultimately decided not to suspend Favre because it couldn't prove the photos - some of which included pictures of a penis - were from Favre, or were even of Favre.

Although Favre has reportedly admitted to leaving the racy voice mails, he denied sending graphic photos.

Sterger's lawyer Phil Reese previously told the New York Post that his client would not sue Favre or the NFL if the league suspended the quarterback and implemented a program that would prevent unwanted advances from happening in the future.
