Brazilian girl Amanda Régis angers Twitterverse with racist tweets after soccer game

Amanda Régis Twitter

(CBS/What's Trending) - The fact that Amanda Régis only had 500 followers on Twitter hasn't stopped her from becoming a worldwide trend. And, it's for all the wrong reasons.

The Brazilian girl was live tweeting during the Ceará versus Flamengo game during the first round of the Copa do Brasil (Brazil Cup) tournament. After her southeastern Flamengo team tied with Ceará, she posted some nasty racist comments about the opposing northeastern team. Brazilian citizens -- and later the world -- became outraged at her tweets, pushing her name to the top of the Twitter trending list this morning.

She's taken down her @_AmandaRegis Twitter account, but her ignorance was immortalized thanks to the wonderful screenshot.

Roughly translated, she wrote:  "These northeastern browns, savages, Indians, think they have morals. You're all ugly. No wonder people don't like these breeds." Her case harkens back to the story of Mayara Petruso, a Brazilian law student whose racist Twitter tirade against northeastern citizens had her facing jail time.  She blamed people living in that area for electing left-wing Workers´ Party candidate Dilma Rousseff, and wrote on her Twitter account, ""Northeastern is not us. Do a favour to SP [Sao Paulo]: kill a northeasterner, drowned." We think that if you post something on any of your social media accounts, you should be held responsible for that material, especially if it incites unwarranted toward another race. Do you agree?
