Calling the two men "suspect one" and "suspect two," FBI Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers stressed they are considered armed and "extremely dangerous" and that citizens should not approach them, but rather contact law enforcement if they know or see them.

"Somebody out there knows these individuals," said DesLauriers. "Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us."

DesLauriers said "suspect two," who was wearing a white cap, was observed leaving a backpack near the site of the second bombing.

Three people were killed and more than 170 injured when two bombs exploded near the finish line of the elite race on Monday.
