(CBS) "Bobby Fischer Against the World," HBO's documentary about the world chess champion, premiered on Monday night - and you didn't have to understand chess to enjoy it.

The doc chronicled Fischer's life, from his start as a child prodigy to his 2008 death, but the central focus of the story was his historic 1972 match against Soviet Boris Spassky in Iceland.

"Bobby was an amazingly complex person," Liz Garbus, who directed the documentary, told CBSNews.com's Rick Borutta. "On the one hand, he was a celebrity, rock star, who liked the limelight...On the other hand, he was reclusive and reluctant and sort of socially awkward. And in various periods of his life these different sides of him were sort of augmented and brought out.
