Bob Schieffer: France attacks are the next step in terrorism

Chief Washington correspondent and "Face The Nation" anchor Bob Schieffer spoke to CBSN about the ramification of this latest string of terror events in France.

"I think we're at a new juncture here," said Schieffer. "This is what U.S. intelligence officials and officials dealing with terrorism all around the world have been saying was probably the next step."

"You're dealing not with foreign fighters who come in from other places and stage these attacks," Schieffer said. "These are French citizens. These are homegrown terrorists."

Cherif and Said Kouachi, the suspected perpetrators of a deadly attack on the provocative French magazine Charlie Hebdo, were involved in a deadly hostage situation Friday. The feeling was they had been avoiding capture or hoping to either be killed in a confrontation or escape to fight another day.

Schieffer added that at least one of the brothers has gone to Yemen and has gotten considerable terror training while there. It is believed that the brothers were on a U.S. no-fly list.

But French citizens don't need a visa to come into the United States. Bob Schieffer noted that poses a threat to America.

"We do believe there may be as many as a thousand jihadists living in France," Schieffer said. "There's no way you can say that this does not increase the threat of something like this happening in the U.S."
