Schieffer: Trump campaign made "calculated decision" to allow Cruz's speech
CLEVELAND -- The Republican National Convention this week started out with "some nervous Republicans," said "Face the Nation" host John Dickerson.
Some of those nerves were calmed by Trump's pick of Mike Pence for Vice President. "They felt like Donald Trump had picked somebody sensible."
But with the embarrassing Melania Trump plagiarism scandal, and Ted Cruz's controversial speech, "people are feeling nervous again that there is this drama that surrounds Donald Trump," Dickerson said.
On Thursday night, Dickerson says supporters will be looking for reassurance from Trump in his acceptance speech that he will calm the tone of the campaign down going forward -- and unite the party.
"This was supposed to be a coming together, what we saw instead was a party that seems to be coming apart," said Bob Schieffer, who has covered every convention since 1968.
Schieffer said the Cruz incident didn't help things much.
"The Trump people knew that was going to happen. They could have stopped it, instead they made a calculated decision to let him come out and walk directly into what turned out to be an ambush."
