Boardwine Family: "Face Off" Finalists
Dave Price decided to change his ways after only one day of revealing The Early Show's "Singing Family Face Off" finalists.
On Monday, the features reporter and weather anchor was conspicuously conspicuous as he approached the home of the first of the six finalists in the competition, the Oswald Bros. Band, of suburban Atlanta.
In the end, he knocked on the door of the Boardwine family home in the Cleveland suburb of Streetsboro, Ohio.
The pop-rocking Boardwine Family Band is made up the father, Jim, who does background vocals and guitar, his daughter, Desiree, 17, who does lead vocals and guitar), his son, Brett, 14, who plays keyboard, and Jim's brother, "Uncle Joe," who plays drums..
The group formed just a few months ago, but the kids have been in bands since they were each around 10 years old. Jim and Joe have also been playing together since they were children.
Jim happens to be a teacher at Desiree and Brett's school. Desiree is a senior, Brett a freshman.
The kids say it was "weird" at first, playing in a band with their dad and uncle, but "they're not lame -- for being older! -- and they're really fun, and cool, and they have good ideas."
Jim is only 34, and was 17 when, he says, a "really special story" began. "I found out that I was going to be a father, and Desiree was that child. And it's just really fun, 17 years later, to be doing this together, to be making it as a family and to love each other, to be with each other and making music. ... We love two things more than anything -- family and music."
"You can't get closer than family," Brett points out, "you know, blood's thicker than water."
"Uncle Joe" says the song the group performed in the video they submitted, "Raise Your Hands," is "like a celebration song, overcoming obstacles and making a commitment and working hard to do the things you want to do, even though they're not always easy."
Says Desiree, "I just view this competition as a way for us to be that much closer. So to win would be like my dream come true!"
The Early Show searched for months, going through hundreds of videos submitted by family bands, then narrowed the field to six finalists.
Each weekday morning from Feb. 16 through Feb. 23, Price will be surprising the six family finalists with the big news, live on The Early Show.
On Wednesday, Feb. 25, the competition begins with live performances in The Early Show studio. Vote for your favorite online each week! The winning family will be announced April 1.
