NEW YORK (CBS) Royal Ascot's five-day horse racing carnival began Monday and the elegant hats of the ladies at the Royal Ascot Races are, in a word, showstopping.

The women of Royal Ascot strutted their stuff all weekend in the finest, and most vertical, of hats.

Racegoers wore polychromatic hats on the first day of the horse race meeting in Ascot, England. Ornate hats on ladies have been a staple at the event for many number of years.

Every year, Queen Elizabeth II makes her way down to the races in a special parade, where she, too, wears her own dignified headpiece, arriving to the big day in an open carriage.

While the fashion of the first day made a stir in the stands, on the track the big winner of the day was a horse named Goldikova, who won the Queen Anne Stakes.
