Beyonce among stars paying tribute to Etta James

(CBS) Beyonce is among those mourning the loss of singing legend Etta James, who died Friday morning at the age of 73 from complications of leukemia.

The new mom, who played James in the 2008 film "Cadillac Records," posted a message on her website, calling the singer's death a "huge loss."

"Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen," she wrote. "Her musical contributions will last a lifetime."

"Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist," Beyonce continued. "When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter."

She ended the tribute by writing, "She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed."

Other stars have also posted messages about James.

Singer Pink wrote on her Twitter page, "RIP to the late and great Etta James. Your voice and your fight inspired me and many. I love that through recordings,people can live forever."

Actress Gabrielle Union tweeted, "We've lost another treasure...RIP ETTA JAMES," while Jessica Alba said, "thank you Etta James for giving us all the gift of song. RIP."

"CLASSIC. ONE OF A KIND. PURE SOUL. ETTA JAMES! Thank You for gracing us with your incredible talent & presence!," tweeted singer Kelly Rowland.

Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas also paid tribute to James on Twitter. He wrote, "Showing respect appreciation and love for all the wonderful music and joy #ettajames brought to the world...#ettajamesforever."
