Beware Of 'Crazy Tobacco'

The companies that make up the U.S. tobacco industry may swear that the nicotine levels in their tobaccos are never manipulated, but there is evidence that the Brown & Williamson company may have done just that, CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart reports.

Deep in the heart of Brazil, a mutant form of super-tobacco has taken root. "Fumo Louco," or "Crazy Tobacco," can grow to seven feet tall, and deliver twice the nicotine punch of ordinary tobacco.

The unnaturally powerful strain is a product of Brown & Williamson's genetic engineering, and it was brought to Brazil in an apparent bid to escape unwanted scrutiny by the U.S. government.

Hundreds of Brazilian farmers grew and cured the mutant tobacco under careful supervision. The mature leaves were sent back to the U.S. and blended with American cigarettes.

CBS News has learned that the FBI is examining conflicting statements by Brown & Williamson about its role in the scheme.

Why would Brown & Williamson want to create such a powerful, nicotine-rich tobacco?
