Atlanta-area police officer fatally shot after 4 months on the force
(CBS/AP) CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - A 24-year-old police officer in Georgia was fatally shot in the head Monday during his first four months with the Clayton County Police Department.
Sean Callahan died of his injuries Tuesday morning, police said.
Police were responding to a domestic dispute near a motel on Davidson Parkway in Stockbridge, about 20 miles southeast of Atlanta, around 2 p.m. Monday. Officers attempted to arrest a couple at the motel, but the man broke free. As officers chased the suspect, he fired shots at them. Police returned fire and killed him, but Callahan had been shot twice in the head.
The unidentified woman who was involved in the domestic dispute was taken into custody.
"Our job as police officers is to protect and serve. Our job requires us to run to face the danger, no matter what the circumstances," Lt. Chris Windley said in a statement Tuesday.
Callahan is the second Clayton County police officer to be seriously hurt while on duty within a week. On Wednesday a burglary suspect hit another officer with a truck.
