Arrest in Murder of Atlanta Businessman, Father of Two, Russell Sneiderman
ATLANTA (CBS/AP) Respected businessman Russell Sneiderman was shot dead in the parking lot of a Dunwoody preschool minutes after he dropped off his 2-year-old son on Nov. 18, a killing that shook the tiny Atlanta suburb.
Tuesday, a suspect was arrested and charged with Sneiderman's murder, in an investigation police say is ongoing.
Was there a hit on the 36-year-old father of two who had a Harvard MBA?
Hemy Zvi Neuman, 46, and who police say is from Israel, is charged in the shooting death. He's being held without bail at the DeKalb County Jail.
"We're absolutely relieved we made an arrest, but it's still a very active investigation," said Police Sgt. Mike Carlson, who would not release more details on the case.
The shooting and subsequent manhunt jolted the affluent community north of Atlanta. Authorities urged witnesses to come forward with any tips about the suspect, who they say hopped in a silver minivan and fled the scene. They even set up a system that allowed tipsters to send encrypted text messages.
Police have said they believe Sneiderman may have been targeted because no words were exchanged between the gunman and the suspect. But his friends and family said Sneiderman was an unlikely target.
The 36-year-old father of two had an MBA from Harvard and was a financial consultant in Atlanta before joining a private business venture, his friends said. Steven Sneiderman said his brother was known for his big heart and wide circle of friends.
Police would not offer any details on a possible motive, and authorities also would not say whether Neuman knew Sneiderman. The victim's brother also said he was uncertain if the two knew each other.
"There's still a lot of questions that we need answered," Steven Sneiderman said. "But we're grateful for the hard work of the Dunwoody Police Department and we look forward to seeing this case through to a conclusion."
