Are Violent Computer Games to Blame?
They are games that have made millions. But have Quake and Doom and other games like them made our children killers? Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is an expert on the psychology of killing. He's been in the media a lot lately and before Senate committees, saying it is time to recognize the violent games for what they are....
"These games that we're selling to our kids that the military has now contracted them and uses them as training devices. The Army has a plastic M-16 that you fire at a screen and it is manufactured by Nintendo."
Doom has been used by the Marines as a tactical training device.
"Those whose job it is to, again, God forbid, teach people how to kill, the military, the law enforcement, those individuals use these instruments with great caution and use them because they know they work."
And yet, Grossman points out, so many parents, who may worry about the influence of movies, allow their kids to play the violent games...
"They are definitely worse than movies. They are another whole notch worse than movies could possibly be."
Kids are doing the killing in the games, not just watching. Grossman is arguing for government imposed restrictions. In the wake of Littleton, he hopes people are finally ready to listen.
