Apparently drunk van driver causes scare at Pentagon

Three men were taken into custody by the Pentagon Sunday after their van attracted police attention and the driver was determined to be drunk.

The Pentagon Force Protection Agency said in a statement that Pentagon police noticed an "impassive vehicle" near the South Parking Lot of the building just before 7:30 a.m. The van had a wire protruding from the driver's door and three occupants who were unresponsive, so the van was deemed suspicious.

Police told CBS affiliate WUSA in Washington, D.C., the three men were "passed out."

A hazmat unit and bomb squad responded to the scene and a robot trained to search for improvised explosives screened the vehicle.

When the van's occupants were asked to exit the vehicle, they instead tried to drive away. They were stopped, apprehended and taken into custody, at which point the driver was given a breathalyzer test. He registered a .113 blood alcohol level, well above the legal limit of .08 for drivers.

The vehicle was not found to have any hazardous or dangerous materials and was towed away, the agency said.
