AP: A-Rod to be disciplined for seeking 2nd doctor
NEW YORK A person familiar with the Yankees' deliberations says the team intends to discipline Alex Rodriguez for seeking a second medical opinion on his injured leg without New York's permission.
The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized, said the type of penalty had not yet been determined. A fine appeared to be the most likely option.
The person also said that during a conference call Thursday, the Yankees and Rodriguez agreed to a timetable that would have the third baseman resume minor league rehabilitation games or simulated games around Aug. 1.
Rodriguez, who has been sidelined since hip surgery in January, issued a statement earlier in the day saying he wanted to be activated for Friday's homestand opener against Tampa Bay.
Rodriguez could be facing even bigger problems. Baseball's highest-paid player is under investigation for taking performance-enhancing drugs along with 15 others.
An MLB team executive recently told CBS News correspondent Jim Axelrod it's not a matter of "if" Rodriguez will be suspended, but when."
"They have an overwhelming amount of evidence on this guy showing multiple years of usage," the executive said. "He's met with Major League Baseball. He's seen the evidence."
Milwaukee Brewers' outfielder Ryan Braun, also under investigation for doping, was suspended Monday for the rest of the season. The executive said he believes Rodriguez is "staring down a penalty much, much harsher than Braun's."
