Animated Map of Unemployment Since 2007
In its latest weekly report on unemployment the Labor Department reports that jobless claims rose by 12,000 to 500,000. While Wall Street economists had forecasted that claims would drop and private employers are adding 100,000 jobs per month, that's still the fourth increase in the past five weeks. Just as troubling - hat tip to Arianna Huffington - bankruptcies have reached their highest level since 2005. More than 420,000 people and businesses filed for bankruptcy between April and June. Between June 2009 to June 2010, there were 1.57 million bankruptcies. That's a 20 percent increase in just 12 months.
