Angelina Jolie and son Maddox team up for Netflix film

Angelina Jolie is teaming up with Netflix to direct an adaptation of "First they Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers."

The film will be based on Loung Ung's memoir of her experiences during the Khmer Rouge regime as a child. It's expected to be available on Netflix in late 2016.

Jolie's 13-year-old son Maddox is also involved in the movie, though it's unclear what his role will be. In a 2014 Vanity Fair article, it was revealed he worked as a production assistant on Jolie's upcoming directorial effort "By the Sea."

Jolie co-adapted the script with Ung. The actress and director says the memoir deepened her understanding of how children experience war. It also helped reinforce her connection to Cambodia, where her son Maddox was born.

"I was deeply affected by Loung's book," Jolie says in a statement. "It deepened forever my understanding of how children experience war and are affected by the emotional memory of it. And it helped me draw closer still to the people of Cambodia, my son's homeland. . .It is a dream come true to be able to adapt this book for the screen, and I'm honored to work alongside Loung and filmmaker Rithy Panh."

Jolie recently directed the Louis Zamperini biopic "Unbroken" and is in post-production on the drama "By the Sea," in which she also acts alongside her husband, Brad Pitt.
