"American Horror Story: Freak Show": Watch Jessica Lange sing "Life on Mars"
The premiere of "American Horror Story: Freak Show" had a two-headed woman, a bearded lady and a killer clown, but the moment everyone's talking about involved a powder blue suit and a David Bowie song.
During Wednesday's episode, Jessica Lange, as her character Elsa Mars, took to the stage and performed a German-accented rendition of Bowie's "Life on Mars."
This "AHS" season is set in the 1950s, and yes, the Bowie tune didn't come out until 1971. But series creator Ryan Murphy isn't going for historical accuracy here -- and there are more musical numbers like it to come. A preview of next week's episode showed Sarah Paulson singing Fiona Apple's "Criminal," and Lange is due to sing a Lana Del Ray song later this season.
"I really wanted to do an homage to my friend and idol Baz Luhrmann, who does such amazing things with music and period," Murphy told E! News recently. "We didn't want to do 'Happy Days,' we didn't want to do all '50s music. So, what we did was, we decided to do musical numbers when they're needed, not all the time, that feature artists who have identified as odd, different freaks, that felt like outcasts. We did Lana Del Rey, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie. People who I admire who really changed the landscape of music, based on them feeling like outsiders."
And if you want to keep listening to Lange's "Life on Mars," here's good news -- Murphy tweeted that, due to popular demand, her cover will be released on iTunes.
