"American Gothic" home renter talks pie, new life
(CBS News) The farmhouse featured in the painting "American Gothic" by Grant Wood of a man, a woman, and a pitchfork is a real place in Eldon, Iowa.
The home, like the painting, stands as an icon of American living. Its current inhabitant, Beth Howard, has made a life for herself there that extols the virtues of life in the country's heartland.
After the death of her husband in 2009, Howard gave up her life in the fast lane in Malibu, Calif., exchanging pressure-filled days in front of a computer screen for life making pies for tourists who come for a glimpse of the famed home. The effort was the inspiration for her book, "Making Piece: A Memoir of Love, Loss & Pie."
