NEW YORK (CBS) California friends Ron Kellem and Tony Stovall, who met decades ago during a production of "The Wiz," performed some sleight of hand themselves Sunday night, going from first place to last during the 90-minute premiere of "The Amazing Race."

The two, who lost hours trying to find Eastnor Castle outside London, were the first to be eliminated.

The new season also saw the introduction of the Express Pass, which will allow the team holding it to by bypass a challenge they don't like or can't do and go straight on to the next clue. It was won by dating couple Jill and Thomas, the first to arrive at the pit stop.

The game began in Gloucester, Mass., and moved to London, where clues were hidden at Stonehenge and Eastnor Castle, which also was the pit stop. Challenges included storming the castle battlements and knocking over a tin knight with watermelons catapulted from a slingshot. The mishap that sent one melon boomeranging into the shooter's face had already gone viral in the weeks before the show premiered.

Judging from the premiere, there may be some fun moments ahead. Teams to watch for entertainment value include Connor and Jonathan, a capella singers from Princeton who not only break into song at the slightest excuse and but stop to help competitors who break down on the road; Michael and Kevin, a Texas father and his YouTube comedian son; and tattooed dating couple Nick and Vicki, who give new meaning to the word dumb.

They admitted they had never before heard of Stonehenge; they obviously didn't have a clue what a battlement was and had a really hard time finding flags and boats that were right in front of them.

To emphasize a point that only the most distracted viewer would have missed, host Phil Keoghan asked them at the pit stop what country they were in. When Vicki automatically said London, Keoghan grimaced and said, "Yes. The Country of London."
