Amanda Knox Update: Parents Indicted for Libel Against Italian Police
(CBS/AP) Amanda Knox's appeal of her murder conviction is ongoing, but her parents' trial for libel has just begun. According to an Italian news agency, Curt Knox and Edda Mellas were indicted Tuesday on charges that they libeled the Perugia police with their claims of brutality against their daughter.
Luciano Ghirga, a lawyer for the parents, confirmed the indictment and said trial was set for July 4. He said the couple did not attend the hearing.
The charge stems from an interview they gave Britain's Sunday Times years ago in which the father alleged police had physically and verbally abused his daughter during questioning after Meredith Kercher's 2007 slaying, before Knox was arrested.
Police have denied harming Knox.
Knox also faces slander charges and her trial is set for May 17. Perugian police filed their slander suit after Knox testified during her 2009 murder trial that during their nearly nine-hour interrogation, they bullied her and hit her on the back of the head saying "Come on, come on. Remember. Remember."
A family representative said there was no comment.
